Evangeline tells a tale of how she came to be trapped with the alchemist known as the hermit card. Before the flash Evangeline was a typical teenager girl in her sophomore year. When she starts experiencing hallucinations of visions.

When the new kid's show up to Evie's school she meets Jackson. There soon paired up as partners for a class project. Evie starts to get visions and communicate with a boy. Evie tries to ignore the visions and voices in her head. Evie starts to get visions of a pale horse and death from the tarot cards that her grandmother used to teach her about when she was little. When Evie falls asleep at school Jack finds out that she goes threw nightmares. When Evie goes threw school routines she starts having visions again that start to make her sick. Evie starts to figure out who the visions are coming from and that his name is Matthew and his tarot card is the fool. When at a party with her friends and boyfriend Evie learns that her cell phones and drawings along with her friends things were stole and Jackson and his buddy's took them. She goes to Jacks house to get her drawings back. When she goes she learns how poorly Jack lives in his house. The next day she watch's the news with her mother as they learns something bad is happening and a flash kills lots of people and turns the world into a apocalypse. Evie and her mom try to figure out what her gran was teaching her about the flash and how Evie fits into it all. And all they know is that she is the empress card. Evie also gets vision from Matthew at least once a week. After a few weeks of being in the apocalypse world Evie her mom ends up getting hurt along with that she learns of a new talent. She can grow things with her blood. Jack comes to recuse her before a group of men come that direction her house was in. Evie's mother dies before the men come and she and Jackson burn the haven that's Evie's home. Before Evie and Jackson left haven Evie kept hearing -bringer of doubt.- out in the world as they traveled for there first night they stayed in a ship and Jackson made Evie and them stay in the same room and one was to stay awake for look out. When Evie was taking a shower she was given another vision from Matthew. Jackson soon learns about the tarot cards and the voices that Evie hears in her head. Matthew starts to give Evie images and visions about him needing to get rescued. Soon Evie and Jackson finds a house fully secured and stocked full of food. When they should soon meet Selena -bringer of doubt- . As the days go on that Jack and Evie stay with Selena, Evie talks with Matthew more and more in her mind communicating. Selena ignores the fact that Evie is the empress card and she is the bringer of doubt card. Evie tries to leave and rescue Matthew and Jack refuses to leave Selena's. But he and Selena follow after Evie to rescue Matthew. When they rescue Matthew they head back to Selena's. Jack tries to figure out what Matthew means to Evie. Jackson learns that Matthew has been sending Evie visions and that he's been pushing those visions to her to protect her. And that Matthew can somehow see the future. Matthew tells Evie that she can't hear the nearby cards because of Jackson. Soon Matthew and Evie are captured by the militiamen and caged with another person called Fin. Jackson and Selena rescue them. Fin also tags along with them. When Evie decides to tell Jackson how she feels she catches Selena and Jackson kissing in the back room. The hermit card tries killing her in his basement Evie instead kills him when she uses her full powers on him when he shows his true colors. Jackson reaches her after he see's her kill the hermit in the streets. She also finds out that it wasn't Selena and Jackson kissing it was that Fin pretending to be Jackson to get Selena to kiss him.
